Every Atlanta gay group chat has had this conversation.

“What are we doing tonight?”

Then comes the chaos.

One person checks Instagram. Somebody else searches Eventbrite. Your friend sends a flyer from three weeks ago. Another person suggests the same bar y’all went to last Saturday.

Forty-five minutes later, nobody has put on pants.

Well…a new app called OUT Local wants to fix that.

The Atlanta-based platform is bringing LGBTQ+ events, venues and performers together in one place. Its official launch is scheduled for Oct. 1, just in time for Atlanta Pride weekend on Oct. 10–11.

And as somebody who loves Atlanta nightlife but does not love conducting a federal investigation to find a Saturday-night plan, I’m listening.

OUT Local Puts Atlanta LGBTQ Nightlife in One App

Founder Austin Randall came up with the idea after working on marketing for Pride Run ATL. His problem was pretty simple: finding Atlanta LGBTQ nightlife can require searching everywhere.

According to Randall, OUT Local is designed to condense that information into one destination. Basically, he looked at the gay group chat struggling to make plans and said, “There’s gotta be an app for this.”

Now there is.

What Can You Find on OUT Local?

OUT Local isn’t only a gay-bar directory.

Users can discover drag shows, brunches, bingo, dance parties, queer markets, DJs, community gatherings and other LGBTQ+ events around Atlanta.

The app also lets users browse events by date and category, explore venues, discover performers and save places or events they want to revisit. There’s even a “Happening Tonight” feature for those of us who don’t decide we’re going outside until 8:47 p.m.

Thank you for respecting our lifestyle.

Performers get their own presence too. Users can find drag artists, DJs and entertainers, then keep track of where they’re appearing next. Venue and performer pages can also be claimed and verified for free.

This Could Be Big for Atlanta’s Gay Scene

The timing is interesting because Atlanta LGBTQ nightlife is changing.

Gay bars still matter, but queer social life has spread far beyond traditional bars. There are pop-up parties, drag brunches, sports groups, Black queer events, markets, Pride celebrations and specialty events happening across the city.

That’s great until you’re actually trying to find them.

Social media algorithms don’t care that you’re free Saturday night. Instagram may show you the perfect party on Monday morning after it already happened.

Rude.

OUT Local could solve that discovery problem by giving queer events a dedicated home instead of forcing them to compete with everything else in your feed.

Atlanta Performers Could Benefit Too

This might be the part I’m most interested in. Atlanta has no shortage of queer talent.

The problem is discovery.

You might see an amazing drag queen Friday night, follow her Instagram and then completely miss her next three performances because the algorithm decided you’d rather watch a stranger organize his refrigerator.

OUT Local creates dedicated performer profiles so audiences can keep following the people they discover offline.

Randall is currently researching and adding events, venues and performers himself. However, he told Georgia Voice that he eventually wants performers to have more control over their profiles and the ability to upload their own events.

That’s potentially valuable for local performers who don’t have giant social-media followings.

OUT Local Is Already Showing Signs of What’s Coming

Although the official launch is being promoted for Oct. 1, the iOS app is already available and receiving updates.

Recent versions have added an Atlanta Pride spotlight, venue information such as accessibility and parking, performer profiles, saved events and special Atlanta Black Pride features.

OUT Local is also moving beyond the screen.

Its first live event, The Pride Encore, is scheduled for Oct. 18 at El Ponce. The drag brunch will let attendees use OUT Local profiles to discover performers, follow them, find future appearances and tip them.

Now that gets interesting.

Because OUT Local isn’t simply documenting Atlanta queer culture. It could eventually become part of creating it.

Could OUT Local Become Atlanta’s Queer Nightlife Guide?

That’s the bigger question.

Atlanta has one of the most recognizable LGBTQ+ scenes in the South, but discovering everything happening across that scene can still feel surprisingly scattered.

OUT Local is betting that people want one destination where they can answer a very simple question:

What’s happening tonight?

If the app keeps its listings fresh and gets enough venues, performers and event organizers participating, it could become genuinely useful.

Especially around Pride, when Atlanta has approximately 700 things happening at the same time and your friends somehow want to attend 713 of them.

The real test will come after Pride.

If OUT Local can remain useful on some random Saturday in February when everybody’s group chat suddenly decides, “We need to get out of this house,” then Atlanta may have something.

Atlanta, Are You Downloading?

I like the idea.

Anything that reduces the amount of detective work required to find Atlanta’s gays gets my attention.

Now OUT Local has to prove it can keep up with a city where queer nightlife changes every weekend.

We’ll be watching.
