If you grew up playing Nintendo games, you probably know how much fun it is to create little characters and watch them make friends, fall in love, or act hilarious in weird situations. One super popular Nintendo series called Tomodachi Life did just that but for a long time, it left out something important for many players: queer relationships and nonbinary character options. That’s finally changing with the new game Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.

A Long-Waited Change

The original Tomodachi Life came out over a decade ago and became a favorite life-sim game for Nintendo fans. But even though you could make characters and watch them interact, those characters — called Miis — could only date or marry people of the opposite sex. This left many players unhappy because they couldn’t express same-sex love or gender diversity in their virtual worlds.

Nintendo even apologized in the past for not including same-sex romance options and said that if they ever made another Tomodachi Life game, they wanted it to be more inclusive.

Now, that promise is becoming real.

The Big News: Queer and Nonbinary Miis ❤️🧡💛

During a special Nintendo livestream event called Nintendo Direct, Nintendo revealed that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will finally let players choose nonbinary, male, or female gender options for their Miis. But that’s not all — players can also decide what kinds of relationships their Miis are open to, including:

  • Same-sex dating and marriage
  • Asexual or aromantic options (meaning a Mii might not want a romantic or sexual relationship at all)
  • Miis attracted to more than one gender or none at all

This means that the world of Tomodachi Life will finally reflect the real world’s diversity in gender identity and love.

Why This Matters

For LGBTQ+ gamers and allies, this is a huge moment. Video games have long been a place where people go to express themselves and feel seen, so adding options like gay, bi, nonbinary and aro-ace Miis feels like a big win. For many players, finally being able to make characters that represent who they are — or who they love — makes the game feel more personal and joyful than ever before.

Fans online reacted with excitement. Posts on Reddit and Twitter showed people celebrating that they can now create diverse characters without using mods or work-arounds like they had to in the past. One fan even wrote “WE WONNNNNN” alongside a screenshot of the new Mii creation screen with nonbinary options.

What Else Is New in Living the Dream?

The inclusivity isn’t the only surprise. The upcoming game Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream also has:

  • New island customization — players can design the world where their Miis live.
  • Expanded Mii interactions — relationships, friendships, and funny moments might feel even more lively.
  • More ways to express personality, style, and character traits for your Miis.

It’s set to release on April 16, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2, so fans won’t have to wait much longer to play.

Some People Disagree — But Fans Are Mostly Happy 🤷‍♂️🙂

Of course, not everyone agrees with changes like this — and there have been some negative reactions online from gamers who aren’t thrilled about the new LGBTQ+ options. But overall, the response from the Tomodachi Life community and LGBTQ+ players has been really positive. Many fans are just happy to finally see a game that lets their characters love and live the way they want.

What This Means for Gaming

This move by Nintendo is part of a bigger trend in gaming where developers are making their worlds more welcoming and diverse for all players. Characters who don’t fit into old gender boxes and relationships that go beyond straight love stories are becoming more common, and many gamers say that’s a great thing.

In the end, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream isn’t just another game — it’s a place where imagination and real-world identity can meet. And that sounds like a dream come true for a lot of players.
