LOS ANGELES — The 2025 BET Awards lit up the Peacock Theater this June, proving the annual celebration of Black excellence in entertainment is still as powerful and culturally relevant as ever. Hosted by Kevin Hart, the night honored legends like Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, and Kirk Franklin—blending music, comedy, and tributes into a high-energy showcase.
Yet behind the glitz, BET is quietly reshaping its awards strategy. While the flagship BET Awards remains untouched, the network announced that two other cornerstone events—the BET Hip Hop Awards and the Soul Train Music Awards—will be placed on hiatus.
A Strategic Pause, Not a Goodbye
BET CEO Scott Mills confirmed that the decision is part of a broader digital and programming transformation. “This isn’t about walking away from these shows—it’s about reimagining them for the platforms and audiences of tomorrow,” Mills explained in a recent press statement.
While declining linear TV viewership factored into the decision, industry insiders suggest that BET is exploring streaming-focused versions, interactive fan voting systems, and expanded social media integration to capture younger, global audiences.
Why the BET Awards Endure
The BET Awards has thrived for 25 years because it remains a rare stage that centers Black artistry on a global scale. This year’s ceremony blended nostalgic performances from icons with groundbreaking moments from rising stars—continuing its role as both a time capsule and a launchpad.
Fans and artists alike have responded to the news of the other awards’ hiatus with mixed feelings. Many are saddened to lose annual traditions, but optimistic about the promise of fresh, innovative formats.
Looking Ahead
BET has not announced a specific return date for the Hip Hop or Soul Train Awards, but executives stress that both brands remain core to the network’s cultural identity. As the entertainment industry shifts toward hybrid live-streaming events, these programs may come back bigger, more interactive, and more globally accessible than ever.
For now, the BET Awards continues to stand as a reminder that celebration, recognition, and cultural storytelling are worth preserving—and evolving.
