For many people, home is a place of comfort and safety — a refuge from the chaos of the world. But for countless individuals within the LGBTQ community, home can be the very source of trauma, rejection, or violence. The existence of LGBTQ shelters is therefore not merely about providing a roof over someone’s head; it’s about offering dignity, safety, and hope to those who have often been denied these fundamental human needs.

A Harsh Reality: Homelessness and Discrimination

LGBTQ youth and adults are disproportionately affected by homelessness and housing insecurity. According to research from the Williams Institute at UCLA, LGBTQ youth make up between 20–40% of the homeless youth population, despite comprising only a small percentage of the total youth population. Many are forced from their homes due to family rejection, abuse, or fear of being their authentic selves.

For adults, the challenges persist. Transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals in particular face discrimination in employment and housing, making it harder to secure stable living conditions. Studies show that transgender individuals experience unemployment rates twice the national average and housing discrimination rates exceeding 20%. Without targeted intervention, this systemic marginalization leaves many LGBTQ people vulnerable to life on the streets — where they often face further harassment, violence, and exploitation.

The Role of LGBTQ Shelters

LGBTQ shelters exist to bridge this critical gap. They provide safe, affirming environments that not only meet immediate survival needs but also foster long-term empowerment and self-sufficiency. Unlike traditional shelters, which can sometimes perpetuate discrimination or fail to meet the specific needs of LGBTQ residents, these specialized spaces are designed with inclusion and respect at their core.

Here is a list of some of the LGBTQ shelters that are willing, able and ready to assist:
