Summer 2025 brought a wave of powerful lesbian-centered storytelling to streaming platforms. These are the top films that resonated with audiences thanks to unique narratives, standout performances, and cultural relevance. Here’s what they’re all about:

1. The Wedding Banquet (2025)

A vibrant reimagining of Ang Lee’s 1993 classic, this rom-com centers in Seattle. Min (Han Gi-chan), a closeted South Korean artist, and his partner Chris (Bowen Yang) are faced with cultural and familial pressure when Min’s imposing grandmother threatens his inheritance unless he marries. The solution? A faux marriage with Angela (Kelly Marie Tran), who needs IVF funds, and her partner Lee (Lily Gladstone). Complications and heartfelt moments follow when grandma unexpectedly arrives, forcing the group to juggle lies, identity, and the true meaning of family.

2. Lesbian Space Princess

An off-the-wall, animated sci-fi comedy from Australia. Saira, a sheltered space princess, embarks on a galactic rescue mission to save her ex-girlfriend from the so-called “Straight White Maliens.” Joined by a runaway pop idol, she battles interstellar dangers—and her own self-doubt. This daring debut blends sharp humor with themes of self-love and acceptance.

3. Close to September (Spanish: Casi septiembre)

This Spanish short drama centers on Alejandra, who lives with her family at a campsite near luxury resorts. She handles childcare, fleeting flings with tourists, and keeps her feelings at a distance—until she meets Amara, a visitor who awakens long-suppressed emotions. It’s a tender exploration of desire, responsibility, and reconnection.

4. Sally

A heartfelt documentary about Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. Through the lens of her life partner, Tam O’Shaughnessy, we learn of their 27-year romance kept private during an era that demanded it stay hidden. The film honors Ride’s public legacy and her personal truths.

5. Blind Love

A deeply emotional Taiwanese drama about hidden passion and family duty. Shuyi, a doctor and mother, lives with regret and buried desire. When her son Han meets Xue-jin, Shuyi’s former lover, emotional truths surface. The film moves through memory and longing, framing desire and restraint in a quietly powerful way.

Why These Stories Matter

This summer proved that audiences are hungry for authentic, diverse lesbian stories—from rom-coms that reimagine old classics, to experimental animations, to intimate dramas that put women’s voices at the center. Each of these films not only entertained but also expanded the conversation around visibility, representation, and the many ways love and identity can be portrayed on screen.
