WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump has set a hard deadline for Russia to show “measurable progress” toward ending the war in Ukraine, warning that failure to do so will trigger sweeping new sanctions and unprecedented 100% tariffs on any country buying Russian oil.

The ultimatum, delivered during a press briefing at the White House on Tuesday, is the most aggressive trade threat yet from the administration since the start of the 2025 term. The proposed tariffs would target not just Russia but also its key oil customers—including China, India, and Turkey—potentially redrawing global energy trade routes.

Analysts Warn of Energy Shock

Global markets reacted swiftly. Oil prices spiked 6% in early trading on fears that tariffs on buyers could disrupt supply chains, drive up transportation costs, and exacerbate inflation worldwide.

Energy analysts doubt the tactic will force Russian President Vladimir Putin to change course. “Moscow has weathered years of sanctions,” said Elena Kovacs, senior fellow at the Atlantic Energy Institute. “It’s unlikely that a tariff threat alone will push them to end the conflict—especially when their key buyers are already preparing for such scenarios.”

A Risky Gambit

The move risks alienating U.S. partners who continue to purchase Russian oil out of economic necessity. Diplomats from India and Turkey have privately expressed frustration over what they view as unilateral American economic warfare that could strain alliances.

Still, Trump’s advisers argue that the policy is a necessary escalation after months of stalled diplomatic talks. “The President is making it clear: the cost of war for Russia will be unbearable,” said one senior administration official.

The Road Ahead

The deadline for Russian compliance has not been made public, adding uncertainty to an already volatile geopolitical situation. If enacted, the tariffs could mark a new chapter in the U.S.’s economic strategy—one that links energy trade directly to wartime diplomacy.

As markets brace for impact, one fact remains: the world’s energy map is about to be tested like never before.
