U.S. President Donald Trump has used his first weeks in office to sign multiple executive orders impacting the lives of LGBTQ+ Americans, restricting access to healthcare, military jobs and protection from discrimination.
Last week Trump announced he would stop schools from using federal funds for curriculum, teacher certification or any other purposes related to "gender ideology or discriminatory equity ideology".
LGBTQ+ organisations have begun launching legal challenges against the executive orders, with advocacy groups challenging Trump's order blocking trans people from joining the military.
Advocates and allies have decried the U.S. administration and more lawsuits are expected to be filed as they await how federal agencies will implement the orders.
Here's all you need to know.
What has Trump pledged to do on LGBTQ+ rights?
Trump started his second term on Jan. 20 by signing an executive order stating the United States would only recognise two sexes - male and female - in a blow to non-binary Americans, who might identify as neither.
Former President Joe Biden had introduced a gender-neutral "X" marker in passports during his presidency, but applications for such changes have now been frozen, according to The Guardian.
The new order said federal funds would not be used to "promote gender identity", government guidance documents on trans issues would be removed and trans female prisoners would not be detained in women's prisons.
Some trans female inmates in women's prisons were immediately moved to administrative isolation and told they would be transferred to men's prisons, the American Civil Liberties Union said.
Since then, Trump has signed orders banning gender-affirming care, which can include medical, surgical and mental health services, for anyone under the age of 19.
He has also blocked trans soldiers from serving in the military, stating that a man's "assertion that he is a woman" is not "consistent with the humility and selflessness required of a service member".
In another directive, "Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling", Trump calls for schools to be blocked from using federal funding for purposes relating to "gender ideology or discriminatory equity ideology".
Teachers who are "unlawfully facilitating the social transition of a minor student" could face punishment, the order states.
Trump has ended Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programmes across the federal government, putting such staff on immediate administrative leave and calling for the private sector to take similar action.
He has also ordered a 90-day pause in foreign development assistance, which includes stopping the supply of lifesaving drugs for HIV in countries supported by USAID around the globe.
Elon Musk, the world's richest man, has been tasked by Trump with scaling down the U.S. International Aid Agency (USAID).
What is Trump's record on LGBTQ+ rights?
In his first presidency, Trump sought to roll back anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people across various settings, including health care, employment, adoption, school restrooms, housing and homeless shelters.
The first Trump administration also banned trans Americans from serving in the military - a policy that Biden reversed - and removed LGBTQ+ content from federal websites.
It reassigned the post of U.S. special envoy for LGBTQ+ rights so that it remained vacant until 2021, according to the U.S. State Department.
All references to LGBTQ+ people were removed in a 2020 draft update of USAID policy, and repeated cuts to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) were put forward in Trump's budget proposals.
At the end of his first term in office, nearly a third of U.S. court judges were Trump selections on lifetime appointments - of whom 40% had demonstrable anti-LGBTQ+ bias, analysis by Lambda Legal, an LGBTQ+ rights organization, found in January 2021.
During his 2024 election campaign, Trump spent millions of dollars on online and television adverts that sought to fuel misinformation surrounding policies of his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris on trans issues.
