It was at a university film screening in the 1970s that Julie McCrossin first saw two women kissing.
It was the black-and-white 1930 film, Morocco, starring Marlene Dietrich.
In the scene, which was hugely provocative for its time, Dietrich is a cabaret singer in a tuxedo and top hat who flirts with a woman in the audience, grabs her under the chin and kisses her on the lips.
"She kissed that woman, and I knew absolutely that whatever she was, I needed to be that," says the renowned broadcaster and gay and lesbian advocate.
Fast forward to present day and Julie has just rewatched that classic scene alongside 27-year-old lesbian YouTuber Lauren Elloise, who is seeing it for the first time. Lauren is amused.
"My first reaction was like, 'A woman in a suit. I love that. It's the top hat. Yes, please'," she jokes.
Lauren, who discovered her queer sexuality in high school and later came out on YouTube, is unaware of the stir that little on-screen peck caused.
"It's impossible to convey to someone as young as you how forbidden homosexuality was," Julie reflects. "Back then, it was [regarded] as a mental illness. It was against the law and it was against God's will.
"So, to see a woman in a tuxedo in an elegant manner, kiss another woman gave me hope."
